C.S. Lewis’s Weight of Glory sermon/speech/essay continues to be in my estimation the best work he ever produced. At least half, if not more, of the things I quote/reference from Lewis are contained in this very short piece. If you haven’t read it, you need to. Here is a taste, perhaps the most quoted paragraph of anything he ever said or wrote:

    Indeed, if we consider the
unblushing promises of reward and the
staggering nature of the rewards promised
in the Gospels, it would seem that Our
Lord finds our desires, not too strong, but
too weak. We are half-hearted creatures,
fooling about with drink and sex and
ambition when infinite joy is offered us,
like an ignorant child who wants to go on
making mud pies in a slum because he
cannot imagine what is meant by the offer
of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily
    pleased.

    Can I get an Amen?!

Also, you can download the full manuscript of The Weight of Glory as a PDF here. I must agree with Trey in saying it’s a great essay/sermon.

The C.S. Lewis Foundation’s annual fall retreat in 2010 is on Weight of Glory. It’s at Camp Allen just 45 min north of here and my whole family is going. I highly recommend you take a look.
